Oily skin is a major issue for many people, especially for those of us who live in and around tropical countries. Our body has various sebaceous glands which are located just below the epidermal layer of our skin; these glands are responsible for the secretion of oil to keep our skin from drying out. When the oil secretion from these glands is more than the required level, our skin tends to get oily. This oil can adversely affect our skin in many ways. It blocks our pores and does not allow proper air circulation. As a result, our skin breaks out with acne, pimples, and other skin issues as well. Due to oily skin, our scalp may get infected by dandruff which is again a major problem for most people. These problems mainly occur during summer months.
Why do we have oily skin?
Oily skin occurs mostly due to hormonal imbalance. Hormones, though secreted in small quantities, can have a great impact on our body. Sometimes, due to certain internal issues, there might be over secretion or under secretion of certain hormones, leading to different disorders.
A major cause of oily skin is improper menstrual flow. During menstruation, our body faces abrupt hormonal changes which trigger the oil-secreting glands to increase their secretion leading to oily skin in females.
There are certain medications which increase oil secretion in our body. You will notice that your skin will once again turn bright as soon as you stop that medication.
How do we take care of oily skin?
The first and most basic step you should take to prevent excess oil secretion is to wash your face regularly, about twice a day, with soap and water. You must use a mild soap which is natural and does not contain harsh chemicals in it.
You can also try using various face washes which are suited for oily skin. This will prevent the oil from accumulating on your skin and help you overcome various skin issues. Make sure that you rinse your face thoroughly after applying soap. Also, buy products which are best suited for your skin. Do not use a product if it is causing any type of irritation or allergy to your skin.
However, washing your face with water and soap is just a temporary solution. It will remove the oil from your skin but it will not decrease the secretion of oil. Even after washing your face, your face again gets soaked in oil within an hour or so. So, you should apply some other techniques if you want to permanently get rid of oil secretion.
Cut down on fried and oily food. Eating excessive oil in your diet can trigger the oil secretion from your sebaceous glands. So try to eat food which is good for your health. Include more vegetables and fruits in your diet; they will help make your skin better. Too much oil can have other ill-effects on your body as well. Avoid eating food from the street side. They are made in an unhygienic way with oil of low quality. Eat food which is fat-free, has low oil content and is cholesterol free.
Apply oil free moisturizer on your skin regularly. Many people believe that if you are suffering from oily skin, then you should stay away from moisturizers which is not true. Your skin always needs nourishment, be it dry skin or oily skin. There are various kinds of oil-free moisturizers available in the market. You should purchase one of those and apply it regularly on your face. This will provide your skin with the required nutrients and help it to glow.
Scrub your face weekly to remove the dead cells from your skin. Your skin generates dead skin cells on a daily basis and it is your duty to remove those dead cells from your face. For that, you will have to use a scrubber once a week. Scrubbers have to be applied on your face extremely gently otherwise it can damage the living cells of your skin. Make sure that the scrubber you are using only has natural ingredients in it. You can also prepare a scrubber at home with oatmeal, honey, and CBD. Mix them with water and apply it on your face. Leave it aside for 5 to 10 minutes and then wash it off.
Applying toner on your skin is also beneficial. Skin toners are mainly meant to help you balance your skin’s pH. The toner should be applied regularly on your face. When you apply a toner, the size of your skin pores is reduced which decreases the oil secreted from the skin pores. This will also help to maintain the normal pH balance of your skin. Toners have alcohol as their main ingredient but there are non-alcoholic toners available in the market as well. If you have very sensitive skin and you are looking for a mild toner, then you must go for a non-alcoholic one.
Regular exercise is also a good means by which you can have a healthy and glowing skin. Regular exercise ensures proper blood flow in your body. Also, it helps to maintain hormonal balance of our body. Also, try to drink 2 to 3 litres daily. It will wash away the impurities from your body and give you glowing skin.
You can also add organic remedies like CBD to your daily routine. CBD is an organic and effective way to cleanse clogged pores and remove excess oil from your skin. You can apply CBD topicals like CBD skin creams, lotions, and serums on your face. These topicals are completely organic and will also not have any side effects. Moreover, CBD can also fight other skin issues like eczema, psoriasis, dry skin, rashes, and more. It will leave your skin hydrated, refreshed and free of different signs of aging.
Is there any permanent solution to this problem?
Well, the oil secreted from the oil glands is beneficial to some extent. They act as a lubricant for our skin. However, when this secretion exceeds the normal level, it can cause a problem. Although we will not be able to stop these glands from secreting hormones, we can definitely regulate the amount of oil secreted by them by applying the natural methods which have been mentioned above. You can also undergo medical treatments to get rid of oily skin. For that, you need to consult a dermatologist.
